Rumor confirmed for Pleasant View Beach in North Hatley
At first, I thought it was just a rumor, since a few friends from Hatley Township had gone to North Hatley Town Hall to be told that they would now have to pay $300 for a family of 2 adults and 3 children to access North Hatley Beach. What’s more, following my call to the municipality of North Hatley, if you have 4 children, unfortunately, you’ll have to add $125 for an extra person. This will bring your bill to $425 for 4 children.

It all seemed a mistake, but it’s confirmed that there is no longer any agreement between North Hatley and Canton de Hatley. In fact, when I called the municipality of Canton de Hatley to find out more about this decision, I was politely told that all this had already been published in the bulletin board newspaper. So, to anyone who didn’t know, read your bulletin board. We’re always careful to read the bulletin board when we receive it, but it must have slipped our minds. In fact, it seems to have escaped many other citizens of the Canton as well.

I tried to find the bulletin board in question on the Municipalité du Canton de Hatley website, but to no avail, since the last online publications date back to 2024. Still, it’s June 9, 2025. I did, however, find the winter recreation program.

By the way, on the Municipalité du Canton de Hatley website, it seems that the information is still from 2024, since the North Hatley beach is advertised as being free to Canton de Hatley residents.

À qui la faute? North Hatley, Canton de Hatley ou aux citoyens?

No matter! This unfortunate situation will force Canton de Hatley families to pull out their wallets to access the North Hatley municipal beach this summer.

In fact, during my call with the municipality of North Hatley, it seems that it was the municipality of Canton de Hatley that refused the agreement. The Canton de Hatley is to blame, but we don’t know why. Was it just a political choice, or was it because prices in North Hatley had gone up? I haven’t been able to get any information on the 2024 agreement versus North Hatley’s proposed 2025 agreement. Right now, the problem is a big hot potato that the Municipality of North Hatley and the Municipality of Hatley Township are foolishly exchanging. Residents are the only victims of this situation.

Citizens of Canton de Hatley will have to resign themselves to buying a North Hatley beach pass for the modest sum of $300 for a family of 3 children, plus paying $50 per child instead of $30 for swimming lessons (after you’ve bought your pass, otherwise swimming is $100 per child). In fact, two mothers from Canton de Hatley have shown their teeth: with 4 children, the beach access bill goes from $0 to $425, plus $200 instead of $120 for swimming lessons.

However, you can also take the daily rate at $10 per adult and $5 per child. This means that if you go to North Hatley beach, you’ll have to pay $35 per outing for a family of 3 children and $40 per outing for a family of 4 children. If you’re planning a dozen outings to North Hatley Beach, a subscription may be in order. That’s sarcasm…

For the time being, the 2024 rates are still posted on the North Hatley municipal website.

As for the tennis lessons, North Hatley has informed me that there is no information on the subject yet, but that there will be tennis lessons this summer. Prices will be available shortly.

Are residents of Canton de Hatley losing their access to Lake Massawippi?
In fact, all other possible access to Lake Massawippi from North Hatley is forbidden except at Dreamland Park, where I believe the no-swimming sign has just been torn down… In any case, swimming isn’t really appropriate there, especially with small children. That leaves the small beach just off the federal wharf, which was announced as private last year. If that’s the case again this year, it’s likely to be very busy. In fact, 98% of lakes and rivers in Quebec are now inaccessible.

Finally, residents of Canton de Hatley can also go swimming at the federal wharf with their families. A marvellous and rather dangerous concrete dock with a picnic table, boat launches, propellers and rental pontoons. Fortunately, the municipality of North Hatley has taken care to add a lifebuoy in case of emergency! It’s safer that way.

But what’s going on in North Hatley and Hatley Township? Why are citizens the victims of municipal misunderstandings? Once again, residents are paying the price. It’s an unacceptable situation, all the more so in a difficult economic context that limits citizens’ financial capacity.

On that note, I invite you to express your dissatisfaction and understand the reasons for this misunderstanding, or to run for election 2025.
