Verification with our election chairperson

To verify, we first called Elections Quebec, which then referred us to the election chairperson for our municipality. We contacted him.

As a precaution, I recorded the call so that I could follow his instructions accurately. I invite you to listen to it to fully understand the voting rights of legal entities when a single owner owns a building in the territory.

What has been confirmed for our situation

  • In my case: registration is not possible, since my company rents commercial premises (and does not own the building).
  • In the case of my spouse, Philippe Marchesseault: the election president confirmed, after checking with Elections Quebec, that he has the right to register on the electoral list, even as a legal entity, since he is the sole owner of the building.

My spouse, Philippe Marchesseault, and I went to complete and submit his registration on the electoral list directly at City Hall that same afternoon. At his request, he received immediate confirmation of his registration.

I invite you to listen to the call I made with my spouse to verify our eligibility: the election chair states that he carried out the necessary checks, including an exchange with Elections Quebec, before giving his opinion on our eligibility.

Partial transcript of the call

Actually, I did some checking before calling you back, of course. What I see is that Quebec 9334-1949, which is also a legal entity, is… that company is the owner of 135 Main Street. So, in this case, we have a sole owner, Mr. Marchessault. Yes. Mr. Marchessault can apply to be registered as the sole owner of a building, of the legal entity. He can apply to be registered on the electoral roll.
– Election Chairperson

Resume

Of course, for occupants of business premises and sole proprietors, the issue remains complex. That is why we are relying on organizations and election officials.
